Macro Photography – Extension Tubes Explained

Screen shot 2011-04-13 at 5.40.52 AM

In this video tutorial I will go over extension tubes using my Canon 40D and Live view mode to demonstrate. In the video I used a Kenko 25mm Extension Tube >>. Below is a really great kit by Kenko consisting of 3 different size tubes. I wish I purchased the kit!!

An extension tube is basically a hollow tube that fits in between your camera and lens which intern causes the lens to move further away from the sensor. Moving the lens further from the sensor makes it possible for the lens to focus much closer to your subject, therefore providing Magnification.

Another good set of cheap tubes is the ZeikosAF Macro Extension Tube Set – 13mm, 21mm, and 31mm >> or the factory Canon EF 25mm II Tube, Nikon 27.5mm Tube

you suggest sticking with manual focus rather than auto ones or do the auto work well?

    • Peter,

It’s easier for me to use manual focus when taking macro shots with the extension tubes. The Depth of Field is paper thin, so getting the exact focus point can be almost impossible using autofocus. Most macro photographers use manual focus for this exact reason.

      Best,
      Jay
