Macro Madness: Took some HD Macro Video Footage Today!!

Screen shot 2011-06-16 at 8.08.37 PM

I’ve been flipping over rocks and logs the past few weeks trying to find cool bugs and and stuff, but surprisingly I haven’t had much luck.  Well Today I went out back where Chubs and Sadie hang out and I flipped over a large flat rock and I found a bunch of really tiny slightly red ants. Not the normal pretty large black ant where usually see around are area. So the ants where a little upset on me moving there roof, but I had to move the rock anyway for landscaping purposes so I can’t feel to bad.  In any event the ants were trying to get there eggs underground asap to protect them, so I ran to get my camera gear. By the time I got back over half the eggs were gone and I was only about 3 minutes tops!! These suckers can organize and move!!

I used my Canon 5D Mark II and I opted to grab the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens + the 68mm of Kenko Auto Extension Tube set.  I also used my tri-pod and slid it alone to move the camera the few times it moved. I recorded this in full HD and imported the video footage directly into iMovie at full quality. Once in iMovie I quickly pieced together the few clips I took and then exported the footage at 1280×720, H.264 Best Quality Multi-pass, 30fps. File size is ~ 750Mb and the clip is ~ 3 minutes long.  I decreased the resolution so the file size was some what manageable and up-loadable ;) Click the link for the full HD version in the .m4v format, but please be patient as it takes time to load and your browser will probably need something to play it. It works fine in Firefox for me though.
