Studio Lighting Portrait Photography Tutorial – Using a Huge Octagonal Softbox

Screen shot 2011-12-04 at 6.06.24 AM

I just found this excellent video tutorial by Gavin Hoey using a Huge Octagonal Softbox for the light source which creates and incredible soft light that simulates a large window. Gavin also goes over how to use the large softbox as a white backdrop and uses a model to demonstrate how well the light feathers. Pretty much a sales pitch on the softbox used in the video, but the video itself is still excellent and good for those new to studio lighting and metering.

Huge light sources are my favorite way to shoot!! Whether it be a large softbox like this, window light, or natural light.

Using the smick.co.uk 120cm octagonal softbox Gavin Hoey shows how by just using this one softbox and a 400Ws studio flash head for his studio lighting setup to produce some quality portraits. Live action show shows how Gavin uses several different lighting setups and shows you just how to produce quality results in a simple to understand way.
